Sleep apnea CPAP treatment not effective?

Hi there, I have been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. I am a 27 year old male, and obese.

I was wondering if it is possible for CPAP/APAP treatment to be ineffective? My GP and specialist tell me that the machine says everything is working fine and I’m breathing normally, however I still experience most of my apnea symptoms and I notice a huge difference of quality of sleep based on which position I sleep in, just like before I started treatment. Lying on my back is the worst, side is ok, and stomach seems best. Just like the overnight sleep test indicated without the CPAP.

Is it possible that my treatment is not 100% effective, and that I still suffer apnea, despite the computer saying I breath normally? I had 115,7 breathing pauses per hour (extreme). That’s like two per minute. Is it possible my body is "cheating" the machine?

Thanks so much!

CPAPs are not always effective for everyone… but should still be given a chance to work. They can be very helpful

Some people are too claustrophobic. There are some stream line machines that many patients like.

Positional sleeping is a big thing as well. Hopefully you have a machine that does not hinder your stomach sleeping…We all have our favorite position and it is hard to learn a new one. From personal experience…Stomach sleeping is the only way I can get any rest…Since birth…LOL. Have you tried sleeping on your stomach while wearing your machine still?

Your settings may not be correct for you…your alarm settings may not be set properly…maybe to loose. If your machine is set to alarm after 30 seconds…you may not be triggering the alarm if your apnea is only 20 second. You might need a stronger pressure to keep your airways open. Or there is a possibility that you need a Bipap….this machine has the one pressure while breathing out….like continuous pressure of a CPAP…but it also has a second pressure to help you take breath in. Maybe this will work better for you…

Finally, there are two types of sleep apnea…obstructive= some part of your anatomy is obstructing your breathing. The other is central=your brain is just not telling your body to breathe. This can be caused by heart failure…Your doctor can treat that to lessen the apnea spells.

In the end…it is still a machine..if you are feeling it is not working…talk to your doctor…they are very helpful…other ideas maybe possible.

I hope I didn’t ramble on…and helped some.

this is for those that have sleep apnea. How do you get used to the cpap machine?

I am having a sleep apnea test done soon and may have to use the machine. I had the sleep apnea long time ago but I couldn’t get used to the machine so I sent it back.

Sleep apnea machines and masks have come along way in the last 2 years. 1st make sure that the home care co. that is setting up the equipment will work with you, if they aren’t willing to, go to another company! You are the customer and they CAN get you comfortable with something. There are so many different masks & nasal pillows available, not to mention what they are doing with the machines now! Puritan Bennett has a machine that is about the size of the 1st personnal CD players they came out with in the 80′s, and Respironics has machines that work with your breathing pattern!(check out their web sites)
This is something you need to be pro-active about. Lack of sleep does so many bad things to your body- poor memory, weight gain, depression, etc. Not to mention what the lack of oxygen in your body when you don’t breath at night does to your brain and heart.
Good Luck!

Can a person bring a sleep apnea machine aboard an airplane when flying internationally?

I have sleep apnea and use a sleep apnea breathing machine when sleeping (no oxygen) with a mask and distilled water. When travelling on an airplane internationally can I bring it with me so it is with me at the other country when I get there?

Hello !

I know that most personnel at security checkpoints in airports are familiar with CPAP machines. t’s advisable to carry along your prescription and/or statement of medical necessity from your physician so that you can demonstrate the need for your CPAP machine.

I found from different sources that many CPAP users report no problems getting through the X-ray machine and passing the subsequent explosives and chemical tests, while others are forced to check their CPAP machines because they don’t pass the X-ray check.

My recommendation would therefore be to expect to be able to take your CPAP machine on an airplane with you, but don’t be surprised if you end up having to check it. And don’t forget your prescription from your doctor!

Good luck!

Sleep Apnea?

How much is the sleep apnea machine? All equipments?Total?

The average CPaP machine that also provides warm humidification will run approximately $1200.00. This is a complete setup including hoses, mask, and water chamber. A machine that is capable of supporting BiPaP or Bilevel pressures will cost as much as $1800.00 for a complete setup. Co-pays are dependant on your personal insurance.

How noticeable of a difference will there be when I use my CPAP machine?

I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea about a year ago. I was given a cpap machine and I tried to use it a couple of times, but gave up on it. If I start using it regularly, how much of a difference will I notice in my everyday life? Also, does anyone have any tips on how to get through the first couple of weeks using the machine?

As far as tips on getting used to it, I don’t know because I’ve never used one.

The two people I know who use one have both been able to go off all medications they were taking. One even goes as far as to check into a hotel when the electricity goes off in her house at night because she doesn’t even want to go one night without it.

Good luck getting used to it!

Sleep Apnea….Better than Bipolar Disorder.

Demonstrating my CPAP (Continuous Pressure Airway Pump) that I use at night to protect me from sleep apnea. Kind of just a fun video in case any of you think I’m like not vulnerable or whatever, and definitely if you know someone who has the disorder, let me know (I just started on it.)

And yes, I know I sound stupid but I have nothing better to do on a Monday night when homework is lacking :) And in case you’re wondering, yes, SLEEP APNEA IS BETTER THAN BIPOLAR. DON’T ASK WHY ;)

Anyone have sleep apnea? How loud is the machine they give you that hooks up to the mask?

I have just been diagnosed with it and will be getting my cpap today, just wondering if the cpap is loud and will keep my wife awake

Oh My your wife is going to thank them for the machine. Trust me on that one. My husband uses it and its great. It takes abit of time for you to get used to it, but now my husband cannot sleep without it. You will sleep better. You may get abit of gas in your stomach for awhile do not be alarmed. It is very quiet. My husband just got the higher priced one and its great. You know how dangerous to your health it is without one. So you will be fine. Your wife will finally get to sleep. Its so quiet sometimes i have to reach in the middle of the night to feel if my husband has it on, I dont like him not wearing it. So look forward to a good thing all around.

How do you set the flow pressure on a REM STAR PLUS sleep apnea machine?

I have a REM STAR PRO I am currently using under a doctors prescription and need to set up a second machine for use at the fire station.

the only way i know to do it is to have the people you got it from set it up…the one i have came from LINCARE and they sent someone out to bring the machine set it up and everything….

I have "Sleep Apnea", what is the best face mask to get ?

I’m in the process of getting a machine, mask and everything. Can anyone give me any heads up on this subject before I go and buy ?

It may be a couple of times before you get the right mask. Make sure that the machine isn’t very noisy cause that’s always a headache if anyone is sleeping with you. It depends on the person though with a mask, you will get a red mask line around your face in the morning. I would just look at different mask including those that are more comfortable to wear than those snug ones.
