i use the bipap auto. mfg. is respironics.for approx 2 years i had used a cpap machine made by res med.the setting was the highest possible ,20 on that machine. It caused forced air irritating my eyes, as i use a full mask.inhaling was good, but exhaling was a little difficult.I also now use 2 lpm oxygen with a oxygen concentrator which tubes into the bipap respironics machine. sounds complicated, but it is not.sleep is still difficult, but it is a LOT better than before without the sleep machine, oxygen, and full face mask.
References :
mobilaire companion 590 oxygen concentrator bipap auto with bi flex www.respironics.com

My father has a machine that keeps oxygen flowing all the time. One downside: It is a mask that covers your nose and mouth.

Good hing:
He has been sleeping a lot more, and has had more energy a lot lately... I would recomend it!
References :
1. You need to have a sleep study done by a sleep specialist.
2. A CPAP or a BiPAP is the only treatment....while losing weight will be suggested...the IMMEDIATE treatment is the CPAP. It's not that uncomfortable !
3. Breath-Rite strips are useless for someone who REALLY has sleep apnea. And the mis-conception that they help with sleep apnea is not only ignorant; but DANGEROUS !
4. Most throat surgeries won't help.
5. A person doesn't have to be overweight to have sleep apnea. There are different kinds of sleep apnea.
6. Sleep apnea can cause many health problems; high blood pressure, and heart problems are just a few. People with sleep apnea can have their drivers' license, car insurance and car tags revoked if you are not doing your treatments !

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea 3 years ago; at my top weight of 333 pounds. I was averaging 63 events per hour, and had heart problems and high blood pressure from it. I had a gastric bypass, have lost 135 pounds so far; and just had another sleep study last week....NO MORE SLEEP APNEA !!

Please see a sleep specialist and follow their advice !
References :
I have really severe Apnea. First I tried those 'breath-right' strips. No good. Didn't do a thing for me. Then I went to my doc and he sent me to a sleep clinic where they hooked me to all sorts of monitors and watched me sleep. Then I got a CPAP machine. Friggin' Miracle. I sleep better, lost weight and don't keep my wife awake snoring. They are the best thing going. Medically perfect because they are non-chemical so they don't change your body chemestry. and non-invasive, no surgery. They just solve the problem. And after a couple of days, you don't even notice the mask when you sleep.
References :
True sleep apnea is diagnosed through multiple tests and conditions. If you truely have apnea, there are many routes you can take. If you are overweight, lose some pounds, that is what a doctor is going to suggest first. Then there is the CPAP machine which pushes oxygen in while you breathe, very uncomfortable. For the extreme cases, there is surgery. Another at home method is the Breathe-rite strips.
References :
Generally the best way to determine what treatment is needed for you, is to see your doctor. Typically, the doctor will recommend that you try losing weight if in-fact you are overweight and he/she may request that you undergo a sleep study to determine if you are a candidate for a CPAP. This is a machine that you use at night that creates a continuous positive air pressure that is delivered via a mask that fits over your nose and forces your upper airways to remain open.

Definitely see your physician as sleep apnea can be a very serious condition and if left untreated can be life threatening.
